Container Types & Dimensions
Compare standard shipping container dimensions, internal measurements, payload capacity and cargo applications commonly used in international freight transport and logistics operations.
1. STANDARD DRY CONTAINERS
Standard containers used for general cargo and palletized freight.
| Container Type | Internal Dimensions (L × W × H) | Volume | Max Payload | Euro Pallets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20′ Standard Dry | 5.90 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | 33.2 CBM | 28,200 kg | 11 |
| 40′ Standard Dry | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | 67.7 CBM | 28,800 kg | 23–24 |
| 40′ High Cube Dry | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.69 m | 76.4 CBM | 28,560 kg | 23–24 (+ stackable) |
| 45′ High Cube Dry | 13.56 × 2.35 × 2.69 m | 86 CBM | 27,600 kg | 33 |
2. REEFER CONTAINERS
Temperature-controlled containers designed for refrigerated and climate-sensitive cargo.
| Container Type | Internal Dimensions (L × W × H) | Volume | Max Payload | Temperature Range | Euro Pallets |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20′ Reefer | 5.44 × 2.28 × 2.27 m | 28 CBM | 27,400 kg | -25°C to +25°C | 10 |
| 40′ Reefer | 11.56 × 2.28 × 2.25 m | 58 CBM | 27,700 kg | -25°C to +25°C | 20 |
| 40′ High Cube Reefer | 11.56 × 2.28 × 2.55 m | 67 CBM | 29,000 kg | -25°C to +25°C | 23 |
3. OPEN TOP CONTAINERS
Containers with removable roof systems designed for top-loading cargo.
| Container Type | Internal Dimensions (L × W × H) | Volume | Max Payload | Roof Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20’ Open Top | 5.90 × 2.35 × 2.35 m | 32 CBM | 28,100 kg | Removable Tarpaulin |
| 40’ Open Top | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.35 m | 66 CBM | 30,000 kg | Removable Tarpaulin |
4. FLAT RACK CONTAINERS
Specialized containers designed for oversized and out-of-gauge cargo.
| Container Type | Platform Dimensions (L × W) | Max Payload | Typical Cargo |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20′ Flat Rack | 6.06 × 2.44 × 2.59 m | 27,000 kg | Machinery, generators, steel coils |
| 40′ Flat Rack | 12.19 × 2.44 × 2.59 m | 39,000 kg | Pipes, vehicles, oversized cargo |
PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
20’ containers are generally preferred for heavier cargo, while 40’ containers are commonly used for higher-volume shipments with lower cargo density.
High Cube containers provide additional internal height and are commonly used for lightweight or voluminous cargo requiring additional loading space.
Reefer containers include integrated refrigeration units which reduce internal cargo space compared to standard dry containers.
Open Top and Flat Rack containers are commonly used for oversized or out-of-gauge cargo that cannot be loaded through standard container doors.
Specifications may vary slightly depending on equipment manufacturer and container operator.
